CHAPTER 21

Sam sipped some water and tried to regain some semblance of composure. Though truthfully, she wasn’t sure it would make any difference at this point. She had just completely given in, completely submitted to Laurent. Worse than that, she wanted it, practically begged for it, and then let him punish her. And to top it off, she liked it. Oh this was bad. She sat and looked out towards the mountains, shaking her head. This is so bad.

Suddenly, she felt Laurent’s hands on her hair, stroking it so tenderly. He had come up behind her, but she had been so lost in thought she was startled by his touch. “Samantha, don’t do this. Don’t beat yourself up for giving in to what your body wants.” He purred.

“It’s not that simple, Laurent.” As she said this he came around to face her and knelt in front of her. He took her hands and asked,

“Mais, why not, Cheri?” he looked at her so tenderly, this man was a walking contradiction.

“I’ve already told you. Apparently not with much success given what we just did.” She tried to give a half-hearted laugh. “And I can’t possibly figure this out right now, not after…” she just trailed off. “Laurent, can we just focus on the work right now? I can’t figure out our relationship, but I can go over the status of the campaign and what we’ve been working on while you were in France. Please, I need to just do the work, ok?” She almost pleaded, she was so drained emotionally and now physically.

Laurent nodded and seemed to understand, or at least was willing to switch gears. “Ok, Samantha.” He smiled and shook his head making it clear there was more on his mind.

“What?” She asked a bit snippy.

“You are not like any other woman I’ve ever met, Samantha. Most women, all they want to talk about is the relationship, ad nauseam. In fact, all they want is the relationship part. You…” he trailed off.

“Laurent, you once told me you’re not like other men. Well, I’m not like other women. My goal isn’t a relationship. It never has been. I don’t dream of the prince on the white horse. I don’t need saving.” Sam said with exasperation.

“And I wasn’t trying to save you, Samantha. I just want to be with you.” Sam’s face fell. Did he really just say those words? Somehow it would be easier to hear him say the opposite. But he didn’t stop there. “Samantha, I have worked all my life. Like you, my focus has always been on my career and my successes. And, like you, I have done very well because of that. But for the first time, the first time ever, Samantha, my mother told me something she had never said to me before.” He paused, as if he needed to make sure she heard this, “She told me I looked happy.”

Sam put her head in her hands. Her mind was reeling. She didn’t know what to do with this.
